Im pretty new to all this. These were shot with a d5100 with the 35mm f/1.8

It was my first DLSR and I just made the jump to the D600 which should be landing today!

Those are both of my daughter. All criticism is accepted with open arms. It was my first attempt at creating something good! Thanks

I downloaded them from my wifes facebook so it looks like some of the quality did get lost. I guess Ill upload originals when I get home.

Gorgeous images!! The quality seems fine to me. I like both the photos but I think the B&W image is more appealing to me. Not to take anything away from your photos but you can hardly go wrong shooting a beautiful little baby like yours, so I can't imagine you'll get a lot of critique on these images.

Two great shots Frank. Congrats! Nice lighting and composition. I prefer the first picture and wouldn't mind if the ribbon was B&W too.

Nice work :)

I personally like clean backgrounds when newborns are involved, because you want all eyes on them.
You've already ticked a huge box in my eyes, which is that you didn't shoot "up the nose!" :)
I like the B+W best, if you are more confident, try putting the hand under the chin, brings the face up a little, so it doesn't lay flat into the blanket.

Cute baby too!

My one suggestion to you to improve this photo is add warm lighting, that will compliment the subject of the photo. The baby appears to be comfortable, so adding warm lighting will add to the comfort the viewer sees in the photo. The lighting in your second photo seems cold.
