what does the size of the filter ring 50mm,67mm 77mm have on the picture if any?if the apature controls the light why have such a large glass? thanks

just picked up a 70-300 lens for my d3200, it really make the camera feel small and out of balance. is there any thing i can put on it to make it easier to handle now? any ideas i am new to photography. thanks in advance next question then can any body recomend a good battery grip thanks again
