    The Early Bird

I am experimenting with color and balance. My attempt is not to have a perfect static balance but rather a tensive balance of both form and color. My question is whether or not this is translated to the viewer. D7k; 70-300mm F/4.5-5.6G; ISO 400; f/10 @ 1/250 sec Image created 3-25-12

    Nikkor 70-300mm F/4.5-5.6G VRII

Here's an example of the Nikkor 70-300mm F/4.5-5.6G VRII. I purchased this lens just a few weeks ago and really starting to like it. Despite the comments I've read on line, the AF is fairly fast and very accurate. It was more than capable of tracking this moving hawk. D7k; ISO 800; f/9 @ 1/320 sec

D800 and Diffraction - two words that will soon be synonymous

For all those with a D800 or are patiently waiting for their copy (like me), now would be a good time for us all to read up on optical diffraction. My gut tells me this monster-pixel camera is going to treat us all to a crash course in the subject and any apertures above 8 or 9 will soon be...

    Hummingbird nest 3-23-12

Found a hummingbird's nest in the neighbor's palm tree. Unfortunately it's a cloudy day here so this was taken in fairly low light. Hopefully we'll get some sun before these kids hit the road and I can get a few better images. D7k; 105mm Micro F/2.8D; ISO 2500; f/9 @ 1/160 sec

Will the D800 make lenses above 300mm obsolete?

I wonder what the long term impact of these new super resolution cameras will to long distance lenses, cause you know in just a handful of years the massive 36 mp will seem average by comparison.

Image from 60mm F/2.8D micro Nikkor lens

I like the idea of a database with images from different lenses, so here's an image from a 60mm F/2.8D Micro Nikkor lens. D7k; ISO - 400; f/10 @ 1/250 sec Cropped image Full image

    Happy Vernal Equinox!

Sunrise on the first day of spring! This was taken looking east towards Santee/El Cajon from the top of Mission Trails. D7k; 14-24mm F/2.8G; F4.5; ISO 100 @ 1/400 sec on the first shot and 1/2000 on the second.

    D7000 users with focus issues

I just had a thought - If you are one of the people with focus issues, check "Custom Menu" section a1)AF-S and a2)AF-C priority selection and see they're set at "release" or "focus". If it's set at release then the shutter will activate before the subject is in focus. This could explain some of...

    "Learn4Life"

Another one of my street photos from my day in downtown. I spoke to the her during the trip and asked why the mask. She said that she had just finished her last chemo treatment and was optimistic she was going to beat it. I hope she does. What attracted me to this photo is her unusual look and...

    14-24mm F/2.8G

I did it.....Simply an amazing lens. Putting her on my D7k (800 not here yet, maybe Friday?) and was astounded. Looking thru the viewfinder only seems like I suddenly have a different camera. I think I'll give her a spin tonight with some night photos.

San Diego after the Storm 3-19-12

CS5.1 Photoshop "Photomerge" is a great way of doing landscape when you have a DX camera and no ultra-wide lens. The key is to keep the aperture constant thru the span and if you have a zoom you also have to be sure to keep the focal length constant too. This is a photo looking at San Diego...
