This is the closest I've managed to get to a Kingfisher with my camera but it was still too far. Heavy crop, high ISO and slow shutter due to the poor light mean this shot is very soft but I've got something to work on at least. Will go back when the light is better.

Thanks, I think I'm just frustrated because it was there for so long but there was nothing I could do to get a better picture. An acquaintance on facebook has posted some stunning photos from the same spot. He was using a D800 with a 300mm 2.8 with a 2X TC though I think, so that explains a lot. I think he's just swapped the 2.8 for the new 300 f4, the size difference is massive but I'm not sure I'd have made that swap.

Agreed. Only seen a couple over the last two of years. One, a long way off, and the other a fluorescent blue blur flying around. I often ask local birders if they've seen any. Its a photo bucket list bird for me
