The very idea of it makes me laugh my butt off. AT&T is advertising one now. I don't care how MP is has, it is STILL a cell phone.

What are your thoughts?

Actually.. this phone is pretty nice! I got to play with one, it gives you 2 photos per snap. One is a 5 mp. the other actually is the 41 mp photo. I wouldnt put it up to a nikon d800... but it blew my iphone 4s away as far as noise, crop sharpness and contrast.

Perhaps, but it is STILL just a cell phone. How many people would use a phone to do serious photography?

For many people their cell phone IS their camera, they have a camera in their cell phone so they would argue why own a separate P&S or DSLR or whatever... Because they're not photographers. Marketing loves numbers because most people are "too busy" to do serious research on something as sophisticated as today's smart phones. Start discussing processors, cache memory, bandwidth and watch the typical users eyes glaze over. Put "41" in front of them, though, and instantly they will equate that with "better than <lower number>". Numbers are easy and universally understood.

Just for the record, do I agree putting a 41MP camera on a cell phone is about as useful as tits on a bull.

Nokia Lumia 1020 - Specifications - Nokia - UK

I had a quick read through this (very quick) and eventually came across the camera specs. A number of points sprang to mind.

1) Camera focal length: 26 mm. 3x zoom. I shouldn't be looking to take photos of the moon with it. Perhaps they are hoping that photos can be blown up to 800% due to MPs. I suppose this is digital zoom, rather than real zoom, which is merely going to increase the size of the pixels.

2) Minimum focus range: 15 cms so don't go looking for any macro shots.

3) Secondary camera resolution is given as 1280x960 but no figure is given for the main camera; why not, as this ought to be the main selling point of the thing.

4) Every app on this camera appears to be aimed at instantly posting on Twitter or Facebook, or Facebook or Twitter. That is how photography is seen these days.

5) "just like on a DSLR camera". Only, it isn't a DSLR, it is a compact. So because it has a 41MP sensor, it is 2-3 times better than a Nikon DSLR? I hope very soon to meet someone with one of these so we can compare them properly. This needs to be reported to trades standards for abusive advertising.

it may very well have 41 MPs but the sensor will be tiny. waste of time unless you only want snapshots of your kids or selfies for social network sites.
