Sitting here listening to the rain, trying to rearrange the dividers in my camera bag to take the outfit, guess what it doesnt fit.Even if it did could i carry it far with shoulder problems and general age related aches and pains,i think not.Do members try to work out what to take for a session and do they get it right or is there always something they should have taken but they didnt.
Some times you can be fairly sure what your going out for but not always and even then the unexpected can present its self, ime going to have to try to anticipate but I just wondered if others do it successfully or not.

If I am just going for a walk to look for something to shoot or maybe just my own dogs, I only bring camera and an attached lens, which ever I feel like that day. Sometimes a filter in my pocket.

If Im shooting other peoples dogs, Im bringing it all, except the 35mm. And for shooting people, all but the wide. Camera gear are heavy.

Sometimes I bring more stuff, but then its because I wanna try out an idea.

All depends on what I am going to do for the day. Everyday walks around town or nearby. I pick a lens and go with it. Since I got the 18-105 that becomes easier. Going out of town for a shooting day or weekend like my wife and I do often I carry everything. Different spots along the way I try to think what is along the way ans carry for that during the summer when it is really to hot to have the backpack on. Winter or at least cooler weather I have the backpack on. Recently because of shoulder surgery I can not wear the backpack so I got a belt back and put dividers in it that will hold two lenses and two water bottles on the outside and can wear that on photo walks.

I'm confronting this issue now. What to get to carry my camera around with me? I figure to take a single lens, choosing one that suits my predictions of what I shoot.
But I have pain issues that require that I get something comfortable to carry my camera with.
I don't wear backpacks or anything like those. So what do you recommend?

Bill, no shoulder bags either? I use a shoulder bag which also can be carried by hand.
If not, maybe a belt like Don have.

I don't have anything light, just a medium sized Nikon camera bag. I was thinking about maybe a shoulder strap or something for just the camera and lens that is on it.
But I'm unsure if that is a good idea, or what type or brand to look for.

There are a few times I took limited lenses and wished I had brought more. I have had people want their picture taken and I only brought the 55-300. Which, means standing way back to get the shot or not getting a close up of a shot that I might not get again. So, now I try to bring my 35, 50 and 55-300. I f I do a wedding it all goes.

Got a shoulder strap on my camera, so carry that on 1 shoulder and the bag on the other (if Im bringing a bag). I just got the standard camera strap, like this:

Otherwise I've been highly recommended straps like this: Camera Straps | News | McLean, VA » WinstonSiraj Photography

Before, with Canon, I had a small bag which fitted the camera and a lens attached, didnt use it that much as I only bring the camera to use it.

Sure there are times I wish I had brought something I didn't but I also like to travel light and fast. At some point I think you have to stop asking yourself, "What lens do I need to get the shot I want?" and start asking yourself, "How do I get the shot I want with the lens I have?" You adapt what you have to the situation and you work with it.

For daily walkabout shooting I carry a D7100 with an 18-105mm on a BosStrap that I connect to the camera using a small carabiner (this makes it super fast and easy to remove the strap entirely if I need to) it and call it good. I don't like the BosTail, hence I use the carabiner, but a good sling strap is just about essential, in my book.

Right now I'm too much of a newbie. So I figure my photos will just be of objects or scenes. And so a single lens may due for now. And if I think I need more lenses, I can put my camera case in the car for easy retrieval. :)

From the three straps mentioned, the Nikon strap is out. I had it on for a while and it made me sore and seemed too short for cross shoulder use. So it's between the other two strap types you've recommended.
Thank you very much for your help. I have a hand strap commingle for during use. But I want something like you suggested for carrying the Nikon around with. So two of my strap connections will be used for the hand strap and that leaves the choice of one strap connection and the tripod mount for the cross shoulder strap. :)
Any advice concerning the 2 mounting choices? The tripod mount seems like a good option so I can easily remove the strap when it's not in use. But is that the best choice?

I have a Black Rapid RS-7 and I have a BosStrap. I loved the Black Rapid until I found the BosStrap and here's my take on the two of them.

The Black Rapid: The RS-7 I have is built like a tank. I am not *even* kidding when I say this. The construction of the BR is both a strong point and, in my opinion, a weak point. It's almost too much of a good thing, it's stiff and bulky. That being said it is very comfortable to wear and the cross-body design is the bomb. The RS-7 attaches to your camera using the tripod mounting socket and that means you will need to have a Quick Detach (QD) plate attached to your camera when using the sling. If you remove sling, the QD plate is still there. If I set my camera on something, like a table, the QD plate made it "wobbly" and prone to dinging and denting surfaces it sat on. I found these issues annoying. I also did not like how the camera hung at my side using the tripod mount.

The BosStrap/BosTail: The BosStrap is both thinner and lighter than the Black Rapid. It's made of the same material as the seat-belt in your car. The strap I have is the wider of the two they offer at 1 1/2". It folds up in your hand neatly and is nowhere near as bulky feeling as the RS-7. The BosStrap is also cross-body and very, very comfortable to wear. The BosStrap is designed to be used with the BosTail but I don't like the BosTail so I removed it and instead use a carabiner rated for 20 lbs. This carabiner hooks through the connector on the BosStrap as well as through the strap mounting lug on my D7100. Removing the strap requires unhooking the carabiner from the strap lug, leaving my camera free of any kind of attachments. It's fast, fast, fast to connect/disconnect and requires no additional parts. The camera hangs differently from the strap lug than it will if you mount from the tripod socket. Which you prefer will be a matter of personal taste but I simply prefer the way my camera hangs when using the BosStrap.

Both slings make carrying your camera sooooooo much more comfortable and they leave your hands free. Once you try a sling-strap you'll NEVER go back. You'll laugh at the concept. You'll wonder why it took you so long to discover just how awesome sling-straps are. It will change your life. It will whiten your teeth and make you more attractive to the opposite sex. A sling-strap will improve your car's gas mileage and freshen your breath. It could, quite possibly, save your marriage.

Just my two-cents.

Ah right, didnt think about its always the same size, those Nikon straps. Not the biggest strap in the world!

Yes I thought it would work fine too, until I tried it for a while. My older lenses are heavy too, so that may have cause part of my dislike for the Nikon strap. Lol :)

Fish where can i find the bos strap? Do camera stores carry them, or have to find online?
Thanks

I have a clone of the Black Rapid RS-7 Tripod mount. It is great but a pain in the Butt if you want to use the tripod. I added the BosTail. to it so the tripod mount was freed up and it is perfect now.

Wearing a camera cross chest and hanging by your side at hand level is great. Does not kill your neck and being by your hand it is comfortable to keep a hand on it all the time when you are walking and fast to get up to your eye.

Well it sounds like the BosTail is the one I look to buy when I can come up with the money. :)
Thanks my friends, much appreciated! :D
