    Generally I agree with FredKingston, but I would try even slower shutter speeds on a tripod. The flash will freeze the person, and then the camera has more time to let in the lights of the tree.

    Or, you can do what I tried last weekend, and deliberately move the body after the flash fired. The flash still froze the subjects, and then the lights did their weird thing seen here:

    Amazing how much I learn on this forum. I never thought the A/C lights flickering would affect the capture.

    Turning off all the ambient light and doing tight shots of faces peeking out from, or through, the tree's branches with tree lights illuminating the face could be fun and interesting... Lots of ways you could take this, artistically.
