Internal to slave question please

I am new to this whole lighting thing and have had my YN560III for about a month now. I have gotten good results when I put it in manual triggering where the flash is triggered by another flash (like I had to tell you). Anyways how should the internal flash be set in a D7100 to trigger the speed light without overpowering it so to speak. I usually keep the internal in TTL but I'm afraid that when I have the ISO set low because I know the 560 is my light source the internal is going to bump up it's power to according to the camera and I don't want it technically adding to the exposure. What I am trying to ask is there a way to set it so the internal only sends out a very low power flash to trigger the speedlight without it contributing to much to the overall light source? Thanks, I know this is basic and I know a trigger would solve this problem, but I can't swing a trigger right now as I just bought another lens.

Find the menu item Flash Control for built in Flash and select Manual Control, then set to desired power. I'd think start low and test to see how much you need.

Depending on camera settings and target distance, the built-in flash may not be adding much. Snap a shot with it alone will tell.

Depending on the setup, you could also deflect the built in flash away from the subject but not the slave.

Sounds like you want to use the built in flash to set off another? If so just set the built in flash to commander mode and set the off camera flash to slave. The built in flash although it does fire to set the other flash off does not contribute to the exposure. You may still have catch lights or reflections from it but doesn't add to the scene.

Using commander mode would still require setting the built in flash to manual in the commander menu. Correct?? So simpler just to set the built-in flash to manual. Yes??

Setting the built in flash to commander has three options depending on the camera model. TTL, AA, Manual. Depending on how the photographer wants the CLS to act depends on what setting within the commander menu is chosen. I don't believe if choosing manual, the option for the speedlight acting in TTL is possible. If choosing manual within the commander. Setting it to it's lowest setting as not to contribute to the exposure, not sure if that carries over to the speedlight. If choosing TTL the internal flash's output is so minimal it doesn't add to the flash exposure. The internal meter for the camera doesn't care if a flash is on the camera or not. It's reading only ambient light. It's the preflash from the speedlight that is going to determine what it thinks is the best exposure. If the resulting image seems over or under exposed than adjust the comp + or -. Keep in mind that when introducing third party flash units, some functions won't be supported. Not sure if the combination mentioned will have all the options. Wayne is the guy to ask about flash. Maybe he'll chime in.

The YN560 has two slave modes, S1 and S2. S1 is to be triggered by a manual flash, and S2 is to be triggered by a TTL flash (S2 ignores TTL preflash).

You want S1 and a manual flash trigger. TTL wants to illuminate the subject itself, and is going to try to be full strength for the metered exposure. The 560 is manual, the D7100 should be too.

Saying, you should use S1 slave mode (TTL trigger will not work for S1 mode), and then set the Manual internal flash to a very low manual power level directly (same menu where you select Manual mode). Most minimum power level probably works fine as a trigger, and will have minimal effect on your lighting.
