Help SB 910 is acting up

I've had an SB 910 for about 14 months without any issues. Yesterday although it was flashing I noticed it wasn't illuminating the subject and after I spent some time fiddling about with it the screen completely locked up (and it isn't locked with the icon and won't unlock using the unlock method) and it won't do anything. The screen also won't switch off unless you take the batteries out and when you put the batteries back in you get a flash then a locked screen that won't do anything again?

Help please, I use my flash a lot for macro photography and I'm already feeling panicky I can't get out with my camera properly today!

I would take it into a camera shop, they may be able to help you.

sounds like a corrupted firmware since you got it locked up from your last use. Try re-installing the firmware if possible. if it doesn't correct the problem, nikon might have to "flash" the firmware for a fee.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm not very good at the technical things and I don't know how to re-instal the firmware. I do have the manual so I will have a look now but any tips please?
I live in NI where there are no camera shops lol. I will have to send it to be repaired which I was trying to avoid since it means I will be without it for ages

I don't think there have been any firmware updates to the sb-910, so I don't know where you would get a file with the original version. I'm assuming the flash misbehaves even when not connected to the camera? If it does behave unmounted, then clean the contacts on flash and camera. Are the batteries in good health/charge? Have any batteries ever leaked in the flash? Look inside the battery compartment and check all battery contacts for corrosion. Springs and tabs should all be shiny. Other than that, I think you may have to send it off to Nikon. Check with them first, maybe they can link you to the firmware file to try. It is installed through the camera and memory card. Before you get too caught up in firmware, you can mount the flash, powered on, and check your camera's menu under firmware. If you see an 'S' version, your camera is capable of updating firmware. I think most of the current models can do this. If you don't see S listed, the your camera is not capable OR the flash is messed up to the point it can't communicate with your camera. Either way, pursuing a firmware update would be a dead end without seeing an 'S' version listed.
