Old vs. New Threads

Sometimes even I don't understand what the forum expects when it comes to questions and old threads. If someone creates a new thread asking questions when there is a similar old thread buried on the forum, the two threads get merged together. So why shouldn't members raise an old thread to life and ask their questions there?

How would all of you like to see these types of situations get handled - by posting in an old thread or have members start a new one? There are always conflicting responses. What are your thoughts?

I use the new post button, don't care if its in a new or old thread, posting is the lifeblood of any forum if new member posts in an old thread that's ok with me.

What annoys me more than anything is if a new member asks a quetion and gets told to do a search or RTFM.

When I visit the forum, I use the "new posts" button to see what's going on, and then delve further into my favorite subforums if I want to spend more time. So, whether a post gets put in an old thread or not doesn't really matter to me much.

But I believe new threads keep things moving forward, evolving, etc. Like Mike said, posting is the lifeblood of a forum, right?

I only use the new thread button as well. I am not a fan for blowing someone off to search old threads or to read the manual. Now if you do send them to the manual give them the page and paragraph assistance. The manual is only helpful if you are versed in the Nikon language. It is not always user friendly.

Thanks for asking. I would rather see a new thread started.

â€â€‹Search is not that great here, I have no problem with someone starting a new thread.

While I too prefer new threads, this isn't a topic I have strong feeling's about. Not like some topics, such latex balloons versus mylar for instance.

Seriously... Don't EVEN get me started.

Note sure if it is due-able, but some way to to mark an old thread so it stands out would be nice. Far to often I, and other posters, have responded to an old threat only to realize later, it is probably a dead topic. For example, check out the D3200 Settings Question thread.

Maybe merge all old question threads into an Frequently asked questions area? This happens on all forums, new members dont search and old members get annoyed. I guess it would depend on which is more beneficial to the site owner.

I try to avoid posting on old threads as the original posters might not be following it anymore. And gived that cameras, etc. keep changing, the old post may have the same subject but the answers don't necessarily apply to a new situation. Searching for a topic doesn't necessarily result in a concise, or accurate, list of what I'm looking for. I also think that new users (such as I once was) don't understand where/how to find answers for some topics so creating a new post is the best step. More informative titles for posts would help at times also.

I'm of the go ahead and post a new thread opinion. Searching for old threads can be tedious and often unproductive. Just my dos centavos.
