I got my itinerary to Alaska today. TWENTY FIVE HOURS of travel time for crying out loud! Pensacola to Houston to San Francisco to Anchorage to Fairbanks to Barrow. I leave Pensacola just after noon on Saturday and arrive in Barrow about quarter after 10 the next morning (but they are 3 hours behind us.)

Someone from the hospital should be there to pick me up at the airport and get me situated in the housing provided to us by the hospital.

If I figure it right, it's about 15-17 hours in the air.

Have a safe trip, and hopefully, you'll get some great aurora borealis photos. Watch Spaceweather.com for advance event information.

There is a 5 hour layover in Fairbanks because there are very few flights going into Barrow each day (pop 4500...........SAAAAL-LOOT!)

I am taking the D700 and everything except the 600mm f/4 it just too big. I will use my 300mm f/2.8 and TC-300 if I need more optical reach (and life saving distance) for the polar bears! I should be able to shove the monopod in my suitcase with no problem.

If you need someone to baby-sit your 600mm while you're gone, let me know...;) I'm going to be in Pensacola, by way of Navarre Beach, tomorrow anyway. :cool:

That is the thing about that lens, it has held its value very well. I paid just around 4 grand for it 5 years ago. All of the older Nikkor "fast glass" were the best on the planet when they were introduced and they still hold their own quite well against any of the newer lenses. I can actually resolve the hairs on a gnat's butt at 200 meters with mine!

Something that a number of people new to Nikon (post AIS and started in digital) don't know is that a lot of the "newer" lenses Nikon offers are simply repackaged AF versions of optical formulas that Nikon did years ago. When you have something that good, don't mess with it!

That's inline with what I'm seeing for most top-of-the-line lenses from Nikon in fact, a few are selling now for appreciably more than the cost when new. The most important factor seems to be condition, with those in poorer condition not selling like those in better shape.
