Africa Blog

Today is 12th January 2013 and I still have 62 days before I depart on my African adventure, as every day passes I am getting more and more excited. But I am also worried, I worry that I may have forgotten things. But what things? I think its time to make up a check sheet so I can mark off what I have completed and what is still yet to be done.

Vaccinations - I have considered this one of the most important parts of my pre-departure preparation. So far my vaccinations include, yellow fever, cholera, polio, enough Malaria tablets for the entire trip.

Tickets - Now this is very important and due to my first trip being cancelled I am a bit skeptical to say the least. But I have confirmed my tickets from Australia to Africa I am just yet to receive them.

How to pack - I am yet to do a test run but I have a list of requirements thanks to Nomads whom I will be camping with over a 44 day period.

I would like to see a picture for that day if possible just to see what you are experiencing or seeing. Nice job.

Once my trip gets away I will be updating this blog with photos as you have suggested.
Also I hope to change the description from that of the tour company to my actual experience for each of those days.

Wow, that's a long time. Be sure to bring lots of memory devices and upload as often as you can to every cloud service you can think of. You can get 5 gigs free from Amazon and another 5 free from Microsofts "Skydrive" and 2 gig from Dropbox, upload to them every night. And then have a friend at home pull all these images off the cloud drives to clear up space for the next upload. It might take a little coordination but you'll be glad you did if something gets lost or stolen.

And if you were wondering the answer is yes....we all hate you! ;)

This is the equipement I am taking.

Nikon D800
80 - 400mm VR f5.6
16 - 35mm VR f4
4 x batteries
6 x 32GB SD cards
1 x 1TB HDD Rugged Lacie
1 x 15inch MBP with 1TB HDD
2 x portable car chargers for D800 (should be at post office to pick up)
1 x Solar Panel charger (loan from a mate)
Numerous filters.
Camping equipment
Clothing
DEET

I have Dropbox which I think is at 3.5GB now, but if I send requests I get 500mb per join :) (hint hint), plus not sure if I will have internet access each night. My camera bag will never be leaving my side.

This is my camera bag that I will be taking.

CAN59.group_t.tamracadvent2-580-100.jpg

The Adventure 9 combines a separate daypack and photo section, but you can knock these through into one large compartment by undoing the Velcro-fixed central divider. In regular two-section mode, the bottom half has plenty of room for a DSLR with fitted 70-300mm lens and four other lenses (or three plus a flashgun).
The compartment is noticeably deeper than many, and has no problem taking a big body complete with battery grip. Small models can actually feel a bit lost.
There's a wealth of memory card and battery organisers, built into the internal sides of the cover flaps, plus a 'pop-off pocket' ideal for mains chargers and cables. Straps are available for lashing a tripod to slots on the underside of the pack, but these have to be purchased separately.
Another clue as to the larger-than-average build is that the backpack has an extra section for a 17-inch laptop, which can easily take 15.6-inch widescreen models. With its well-fitting harness, complete with chest and waist straps, the Tamrac Adventure 9 lives up to its name. There's no slip-on rain cover but it's very water-resistant, right down to its weatherproof zips.

Are you sure sure you don't have room for a tiny 50 1.8? Dark villages shots, open fires at night… I'd be afraid to leave for such a trip without one.
