Split Screen helps in fixing manual focus spot on. When two parts of the split screen are aligned, the object is in focus. As the split screen is in the centre, off centre focusing will be a problem

Is the split screen like the old slr cameras used to be?
And by turning the mf lens to focus the image, the two parts of the
    split, actually line up?

Doesn't this split get in the way of the view or object you are trying to see?

I know I sound really dense. When I have hands on something, it is easier
for me to "see" what we are talking about... sorry

I have never used one on DSLR, but specifications and other users say it is same as in the older SLR cameras.

Yes it will obstruct the view partially, but once in focus the view will be continuous.

If you can get hold of an SLR camera with a split screen, you can check and clear your doubts.

Go to the website mentioned earlier and they have examples of screen shots with different type of focusing screen.

    Thanks @Marcel...
I did not realize they had examples on cameras.
Just saw the screen sample itself...
    I will head over there.
