Hi
I have set up to take pictures in RAW and they are not readable with Photoshop Elements 9. Do I need to upgrade or is there a trick?
I have a Nikon D850.

I use Photoshop CC but also have Photoshop Elements 10 installed on my computer. I don't think older versions of Elements like version 9 can support the latest Camera RAW updates. That's what you need for the program to directly support a D850. My Elements 10 has Camera RAW 10 as the latest update. Most likely you can only have the latest Camera RAW 9 update, and that is too old to support newer bodies. So you have a couple of choices.
One would be to update to the latest version of Photoshop Elements. The other is to use Adobe DNG converter and convert your NEF's to DNG's. You can find out more info on Adobe DNG Converter here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/digital-negative.html

By the way, to check for the latest updates, open Photoshop Elements 9 and click on Help. Go to where it states Updates. Click that and see if you have the latest Camera RAW update installed. Most likely it still won't support your D850, but at least work with the latest update to get the most that the program has to offer.
Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have an opportunity to part with some more cash to go with the new camera. It can be a bit frustrating, but with the changes come increased capability. You may even want to look at something else. Hope things go well.
Welcome to the forum. Another option would be to use Nikon Software ie Capture NX-d and then covert your file to .jpg. PSE9 should be able to work with that.
