Dropped my D800! (inside camera bag), opinions pls

Hi there guys,

So earlier today I popped my D800 with its 24-70 into my newly purchased lowepro Pro Messenger AW180. I placed the bag and the camera inside on top of a small suitcase on top of my bed. I turned around to grab something else when I heard the sound of sliding and a big thump as the camera bag landed on the ceramic tiled floor. :(...

The bag landed mostly on the top left hand side (e.g. the left side of the flash/lens/where the ISO/BKT/QUAL controls are would be where most of the landing load would be), but are all inside the camera bag. My question is, given the 3 feet ish fall inside the lowepro bag, with the fall landing sort of sideways ish, should I be concerned? Would the ISO performance be affected? I took a few test snapshots and they seemed to be ok, but wanted to consult the better knowledge here. Thanks!

The D800 is a full metal body..
and the lowepro bags offer decent protection as far as i know..
so am guessing it should be ok (fingers crossed)

The bag's internal padding is alright, walking along the street I could put up with banging it around a little bit. Although it's a metal body, it does hit a special hurt spot to know this happened. fingers xxed there.

I've fallen, tripped and rolled down rocky mountainsides, banging the ever loving daylights out of some of my cameras as I did so, and they've all just kept right on ticking like the day they were made. I'm not advocating Nikon abuse but in all seriousness, they're tools, not porcelain dolls.

What HF said. But, with that being said I still treat mine like eggs. I hope yours is ok. You take any pictures to see if it's alright yet?

Look it over for damage. Shoot some frames off. If it works all should be good. Having your camera in the bed. Man you must love that thing. :p

It's not going to matter if it's okay or not. Nikon does not warranty "impact damage" on the bright side lowepro are padded very very well should be fine.

If it is still functioning correctly, you lucked out. Try the AF mechanism, check for accuracy. My d800e didn't have any external damage but internal mag alloy gave in after a similar impact. Service center is still waiting for Nikon to send them the special alignment tool.

Thanks guys! I dropped by the local Nikon repair center to have a quick checkup. They said initial indications are all normal and a more in depth look seems to be not needed. I guess my cams alright?

My bed's a nice place for me to arrange my stuff but unfortunately may not be the safest area. Good lesson for me to rethink where I place things.
