D7100 keeps changing from NEF(RAW) +JPEG fine to just JPEG fine

I usually figure this out after an important shoot!

Anyone else have this problem?
Never had the issue, never heard of anyone having it...

In the Shooting Menu, you have "Image quality" set to "RAW+JPEG fine"? How do you have your card slots assigned, specifically the "Role played by card in slot 2" setting? Have you saved your settings to U1 or U2?

Since QUAL and ISO buttons are on top of each other, I've accidentally changed it instead of changing ISO. Perhaps that's what happened to you?

This.

It didn't happen often, but with the camera pressed to your eye it's possible to depress these buttons with your cheek while spinning the control wheel. Happened to me once on the D7000, but not since, and not on any of my other Nikons (which have different button arrangements).

Yep! PapaST and Jake nailed the explanation. It happened to me while shooting drama photos. Unfortunately no students were there to run lights, and the theater went pitch black. They turned up the house lights slightly, but I was still in complete darkness in the balcony. I went to raise my ISO and must have hit the QUAL button instead while spinning the dial. Switched mine from RAW + Jpeg Fine to Jpeg Basic. I shot 800+ photos this way. :hurt: Fortunately Jake was able to give me some pointers which helped reduce the excessive noise and adjust the color (due to them using the house lights).

Thanks to all for the replies. That must be what has happened. Now I can be on the lookout for it. I often switch ISO either in the dark or with the camera pressed to my face, so I bet this is it!

I posted a while back about my D7100 switching to RAW & jpeg on its' own. I readjusted it back to just jpeg and have not had an issue since. Looks like I was a victim of myself.

I've had similar issues with the D60 and D7000 I used to have, as well as my current D600s and D7100. They would switch from RAW to JPEG, then back to RAW, for a single frame.

Everyone told me I was accidentally pushing some buttons, but that's rather difficult to do when you're shooting a burst in CH mode.

I contacted Nikon, and never got an answer. I've also read about it on several forums like this one. Since it seems like a 'common' problem that can pop up in any body, I just have accepted the fact that, on occasion, I will have a JPEG amidst all my NEFs.

Not sure about "common". At least I've never heard of it before, nor have I ever seen it in ten years of three Nikon digital cameras.

I've come across it maybe 6 times in the past 3 years on forums. So far, no one has a solution, and Nikon themselves seemed to bail on the issue by simply not responding to my queries.

I would say it rears it's head for me once or twice a year. So it's far less a problem than sensor dust or full memory cards or dead batteries. Hence my Que Sera Sera stance.

I'm always pressing the wrong buttons, so can't believe this has never happened to me. Guess it will now that I've said this :(

Same thing has happened to me a couple times on my D7200.
