formatting sd card/ focus point on view finder

Hi everyone. I have two questions:

My d7100 wont let me format (it did once) my sd cards from the exterior buttons (the little trashcan and the mettering button) I know you push them down at the same time and the FOR should appear in the display area. I have to manually go into the settings in the menu to format my cards. any idea what I might be doing wrong?

Second question: there is a function in the display screen where it shows you where the focus point is on the camera when you review your photos. My question is it shows you where the focus point is (on single point focus) but if you focus and recompost the focus point stays in the same place rather than where you focused. example: if the focus is in the middle point and I shoot a portrait and focus on the eyes and then shoot, when I go to review the photo on my camera it shows the red dot is in the middle instead of the eyes. (I hope I make sense)

thanks for any input.

The 2-button reset is not for reformatting cards.... it's for resetting the camera to it's original state.

The camera has no idea how much you move the camera to recompose as it does not have any internal sensors to do so. So it won't be able to follow any movement and 'relocate' the focus point back to it's original position in the scene.

You have to do it twice. Do it once, then repeat while its still flashing. If you need to do the 2nd card, change it with the command wheel before the 2nd pressing.

Yes, I think you are doing it wrong. :) Its not you, it isn't very clear at first. Holding the two button format shows FOR in top LCD, which is an ARE YOU SURE type of warning. Then you briefly release the buttons, and then press the two buttons again, and THEN it formats.

This is not correct. If you press delete and metering at the same time and hold them for a few seconds 'FOR' will start blinking on the top display and you can chose the card to format. Then press delete+metering again to format this card.

It works for me, but you have to keep holding these two buttons for about 3 seconds. Just be patient.

So which is it? press twice for format, or my pressing it resets the camera?

That was a confusion factor, not applicable here. Different buttons.

See D7100 manual, page 31 for formatting cards. See Step 3 "Push buttons again".

See D7100 manual, page 131 for two button reset of user settings (different buttons)

The manual can be our friend. :)

Sorry I been away. I have been pushing the trashcan button and the meter button and holding them down for more than 3 seconds. Like I said, it worked once and didn't work again so I am confused as why I cant reformat my card thru the outer buttons instead of going into the menu

And you are doing it a 2nd time while it is still flashing from the first pressing?

ewick, everyone is pointing out that you have to do the two buttons twice. Read the instructions in the manual. Read the final instruction step, which specifically says "Do it again".

You have yet to comment on the necessity of doing it twice.

Where does it state the D7100 needs to have the buttons pressed twice? From the manual:

The camera settings listed below can be restored to default values by holding the ISO and +/- buttons down together for more than two seconds (these buttons are marked by a green dot). The control panel turns off briefly while settings are reset.

? There are at least TWO two button thingies. You are quoting D7100 page 131, which is a two button reset of settings. It is a different two buttons. It is NOT about formatting the memory card.

To format memory card, see D7100 page 32. Different purpose, different page, different buttons (but there are two of them).
See step 3 there -"Press the buttons AGAIN, a second time".

Gotcha. I was just going by memory and thought the thread was about resetting the camera to factory settings.

Never mind. Carry on.

1. I would never try that method. In moments of distraction I may format the card, and loose the data. I always use the menu to do it. That way there a re a few safeguards before you loose the data.

2. What you want requires sensors (accelerometers) to track the camera movement. The only camera I know of that does this is the Hasselblad - H4 onwards. No other body that I know of does that. What is done is to focus at say the eyes, lock the focus and then move to the nose/other eye. As long as you do not deviate much and the new focus is withing the DOF it works. The Hasselblad method maintains the focus where you fixed it inspite of your movements.

? The format buttons are there and active regardless if you use them or not. Meaning, if an accident were to happen, it does not matter if you were aware of the buttons or not. Surely safer to realize it. Reminds me of people refusing to use their bank account online, because internet might be risky. But their bank account is still online, regardless if they use it or not. :)

The format button instruction Step 3, Do It Again, A Second Time... is the Are You Sure safety factor. Reduces the chances of accident tremendously. It may require a slight skill and knowledge to use it, but it is still an extremely convenient feature.

What's so hard about going into the Setup Menu and selecting Format? This is difficult??

I agree. I don't really like using buttons....or assigning them, quite simply because I keep forgetting what I've set.

What I do is use the My Menu tab for this purpose...and as this is the last item on the main menu list, it's quick to access as well.

Wait a minute... You managed to get the "Format Memory Card" option added to your My Menu? On a D7100?

I'd love to have that option added but when I try I get a message saying that particular option can not be added to "My Menu". :(
