I like the idea of the black Rapid strap design, but I don't like the idea of using it connected to the tripod socket (strength) what are your opininons of using it connected to one strap lug on the D7100 body as these were designed to hold the camera vs the tripod socket..thanks all.

I have small key ring loops on my D600 and D800 and attach the Black Rapid wrist strap to that. I don't know that I'd be comfortable with it hanging from my Yeti that way, but it would work.

And what makes you believe the camera is not designed to be held by the ¼x20 tripod socket?

I use the BR tether kit that's fixed to one of the two strap loops at one end and to the sport strap at the other. That way, in the unlikely event that the connector to the tripod socket fails, the camera is still attached to the strap. If I'm not using the strap, I can tether the camera to my wrist.

Just my opinion and it needs to be removed every time I want to use it on my tripod and if you look below BR makes a tether kit which says just in case the tripod socket fails that makes me wonder ?? Also putting the camera in my bag with the strap on the bottom seems it would be a pita........

I'll have to look into that tether kit,thanks.....

Following an earlier conversation on here I removed the tripod attachment from my BR strap and put the left-hand (other side from shutter button) clip back in and I now attach my BR caribiner to that. I'm much happier now, but that's largely because I have a battery grip at the bottom which was taking all the weight.

What brand and model of head? You can use this if you have a head that uses RC2 plates.

As for being bothered to put your camera in a bag with the BR attached.... they use a quick-release catch at the camera end. Two seconds, and the BR is off the camera.

I worry less about the attachment failing than about me failing to properly attach it and it separating due my improper "operation". The tripod attachment, done, correctly, is much more robust than the split ring connectors. However, those are just fine for any standard use: has anyone ever had one fail?

I'm just planning on using the one strap lug combo with sm. light zooms and primes not any heavy big zooms 80-400 etc. These eyelets/lugs are designed to hold bodies and lenses on a neck strap so I would think they should be as strong or better then a tripod socket..

I should therefore point out that I use my "modification" with not just the extra battery grip but also an 18-300mm lens.

As a backup, a few people here are using the BOSTAIL. BlackRapid pays attention and came out with the Tether Kit last year to address a concern such as yours.

Nothing wrong with being careful. I have yet to see where a strap mounted to the tripod mount has failed due to normal use.

Enjoy :)
