Hi,
I acquired a used D7000 couple of days ago. Still learning all the functions. I realized that this thing does not beep when shooting object is in focus when I'm using the viewfinder but seems to be ok when using the LCD. I hope I did not get a defective unit?

I would like to suggest you checking out my Nikon D7000 tips thread that you can access by the link at the bottom of this reply and you just might find a lot of helpful information there.

Thank you all for your replies. I searched the manual. It turns out that my viewfinder focus mode was set to AF-C and LCD was in AF-A. According to the manual, camera will not beep when in AF-C mode.
I'm going to read manual thoroughly as suggested by Mojo Dave. And read the tips by Grandpaw as well.

Why would you want it to beep? Can't you see the "green dot" in the view finder as to when it's in focus?

I think focus dots are off to the sides, maybe even right in the corner depending on the body, so without taking the eye off the subject, probably difficult to see when focus is critical. With a beep, there is no need to move the eye to look at the FC dot

For the D7000, the focus indicator (green dot) is in the lower left corner of the viewfinder, and very visible when it is on. I really have no problems seeing it. I find the beep annoying, so I turned it off the day I got my camera.

I find that the beep is very help especially when shooting action such as birds in flight. I have the beep turned on but have set the volume to level one where it can only be heard when you eye is at the eyepiece. This way I get the benefit of the beep but do not have a loud sound annoying me giving me the best of both worlds. If you want to change your volume this is how you do it. I find it helpful and have mine set to volume level "1" and to High pitch.

Go to CUSTOM SETTING MENU and press "OK"
Next select "a" Autofocus and press "OK" again
Scroll to"a1" Beep and press "OK"
Select the volume and adjust the level and press "OK"
Now select pitch and adjust it then press "OK" and you are done

Thats exactly the same as me - you simply cannot take your eye off action in the viewfinder to confirm you have focus, but beeps are really annoying. The level on mine means only i can really hear it.
