Newbie needs help: D7000 or D3300

Hello everyone. I'm stepping into the world of DSLR photography for the first time, and I would like some advice please. I have my sights set on buying either the D7000 (at a pretty good price) or the newer D3300, and I'd like some input from users of either camera as to which of the two I should go for. The D3300 has a higher pixel count, but of course that doesn't necessarily mean better quality. The D7000 on the other hand seems to be better suited for those who like more functionality. I've read reviews of both cameras, but have struggled finding real-world comparisons of the two, other than specs compared, so I'd love to hear the opinions of people here who actually own and use either camera. Thanks for reading. Mike.

I just moved over to the D7000 recently and I love it. Easy access to the main functions without going into the menus and the advantage of lots of Nikkor lenses which don't need a focus motor in them as the D7000 body has it.

The more opinions you read, the more confused you will be.

Both are excellent cameras. The D7000 would give you better controls that can be changed on the run without removing your eyes from the viewfinder and going into the menu screen. I've never handled the D3300 but it seems to be smaller size.

So, my recommendation is: (drum roll) :) Go into a store that sells photo equipment if you can, handle both cameras and see which one fits YOUR hands better. After all, you're the one that's going to be using it. And second, don't worry too much about your initial buy. After a few years, they will bring out a newer shinier model that you will drool over and then you can change to better suit your needs. If you're just beginning with photography, either one will let you learn and produce very good pictures.

Good luck with your choice.

D7000. No focus motor in the 3300 so your lens choice won't be as wide range as the other. Also I've read you can't use the on board flash as a commander. Really depends on your needs. Like Marcel suggested. Go test them out.

depends on your long term goals, which you do not provide, are you working to become a serious digital photographer or happy with leaving in scene mode
like point and shoots. If your goal is to have the high quality digital image with say one or two modern consumer lens,, and don't want to fiddle
with manual modes,, and overriides, I would vote for the 3300,,

and if you are looking into learning the art of camera control, and perhaps have plans over time on upgrading further and or would like to buy
older Nikkor AFs (that need the focus motor in the camera) and or want to meter manual glass, well,, I would suggest the 7000.

either camera is a fine choice.

I don't know the answer to this--do either or both cameras offer high speed shutter sync?

Between the D7000 and the D3300 I too would have to side with the D7000. While the focus motor is a big deal to most, I could find happiness with AF-S lenses in the Nikon lineup and be perfectly content. Still, it's a big feature the D7K has the D33K does not. The '7000 is also weather sealed, has the dual card slots, a lot more focus points/cross-type focus points and a full stop better dynamic range. All of those things matter a lot to me.

I would side with D3300 with its kit lens. This a light weight package with and excellent lense. There are minimum number of buttons and controls to confuse a beginner. The cost is quite low. If you are happy with it, well and good. If in future if you realise that :
1. You are not meant for DSLR
or
2. You have outgrown the body and want advanced functions available in higher end bodies
or
3. You realise you want to go full frame

In all the above cases you will want to sell off the camera. How much loss can you incur in a $550 camera? Not much. The cost in India for a kit with lense, 8GB card and a bag has dropped below US $ 500. Buy Nikon D3300 24.2 MP Digital SLR Camera (Black) with 18-55mm VR II Lens Kit with 8GB Card and Camera Bag Online at Low Price in India | Nikon Camera Reviews & Ratings - Amazon.in

I bought a D3300 knowing what I am getting. I am still quite happy with it after crossing 8,000 shots in 4 months. If I ever upgrade, it will be for a DF body when they give it a 24MP or more MP.

I own a D3300 and it produces high quality photos. I would recommend one to anyone, but..... There's always a BUT. If you only have ONE camera, get the D7000.
