Although I've never tried it myself, it should be a great match for the quality/price ratio. It's well documented that the newer 70-200 is much better, but specially in corners with FX. Since the D7000 is a APC sensor, the lens should perform very well in that area.

Ive bought me the 80-200mm f2.8 AF-D, 2ring version. It's an awesome lens. it works great so far paired with me D7100. and with the battery-grip it doesn't feel that awkwardly out of balance.
one downside is the small lenshood so there's quite some risk for flare...

Image quality will be a lot beter then the 18-200 VRII. , but keep in mind that it has no VR so you will need faster shutter-speeds.
I bought my 80-200mm f2.8 AF-D, 2ring version. for 500 euros last weekend. the 80-200mm f2.8 AF-D, puch-pull version was selling around 300-350 euros depending on the conditions.

I purchased my used 80-200 AF-D in October 2013 for $630us on EBay with a 6 month Nikon Warranty. My lens is in mint condition. I feel the price was good. My lens is also the two ring version.

Hi
I use my 80-200 2.8 for everything that moves never any problems, and always tack sharp on a tripod on me hand held not so often so then I shoot bursts.
