Flash problem

I bought a new d7000 and love it. The photos are awesome. Better than anything I ever shot with a Canon.

However, I attached a flash (Promaster 7500EDF) and this is what is happening every time. It isn't just the flash; I stuck a cheap flash I had on and the same thing happened. However, it isn't happening with the camera's built-in flash. I have a feeling this is a very n00b question and the answer will be very simple, but can someone tell me what's going on here?

That problem is caused by your shutter speed being faster than the cameras maximum sync speed, normally 1/200 or 1/250 second (the latter for your D7000).

Reduce your shutter speed to 1/250 second with flash, and it will eliminate that. Reset D7000 menu E1 to 1/250 (instead of an Auto FP), and then maybe it won't allow that to happen.

There are some folks who know the in's & outs of using flash here & they'll probably give you a technical and more detailed response.
AFAIK this is happening cos your shutter sync speed may be faster than what your flash supports.
For example if the sync speed on a flash is max 1/250 secs, any faster shutter speeds would cause something like this.
