Oil Spots on Sensor

Hi Everyone,

I just had to send my D7000 in to have the sensor cleaned as I had some horrid spots visible, like small bubbles and a few dark dust spots. I was asked if I tried to clean the sensor myself as I had "water spots" on the sensor. I never touched the sensor only tried to blow the sensor area with compressed air, ever so carefully. I was bothered about the spots as I have always babied my equipment, so I did a search on D7000 spots. Much to my surprise it looks like Nikon has been having an over lubrication issue with this model. Anyone else seen this issue??

Check out this tab: Oil Spots on a Nikon D7000 Sensor | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

I have written to the repair shop about this issue and haven't heard back as of yet...My camera is do to be shipped back in the next day or so. Something to keep in mind if you see little bubbles on your photos.

if you used compressed air you could have gotten water vapors on the sensor. You should only use a nose bubble like they use on babies. I know this because I used a can of air first to remove a few spots and ended up with a lot of spots.

Thanks for the feedback...I had some dark spots which were dust, but the bubble looking spots were present and the compressed did nothing but removed some of the dust spots. Check out the tab I enclosed to my original email, you will see the bubble looking spots that I am talking about. Lots of info on the internet about over lubrication of this model, I will be curious to hear back from my repair shop as they are a Nikon Authorized Repair Shop and I think my D7000 might still be under warranty. I will post an update after I hear.

Ken - over lubrication has been a known problem with the D7000 and other cameras. Do not use compressed air. You can order your own sensor cleaner in the future once you learn how to do it. Plenty of youtube tutorials.

You can order this sensor cleaner which evaporates quickly and will not remove any spots.

I clean my own camera sensors except for the D800E since I have not done that yet.

I have been looking into getting the Nikon D7100

And in my research this has been mentioned as a problem with this model aswell. Everyone has mentioned that Nikon is aware of the issue and will rectify for you.

After I paid a local camera repair shop $100 to clean the sensor in my D100 many years ago, I decided that I'd learn how to do it myself. Since then, I've cleaned my D7000 many times and my D600 once. It's no big deal if you get the right tools and take your time.
