For the price I would try to find a new/used 80-200 AF-S (non-VR) or a used 70-200 AF-s VR lens locally. Shoot it before you buy it.

I have heard good things about the Tamron but it is still new and not proven. If you are shooting people/moving objects VR really isnt going help. In that case the 80-200 AF-S is a great lens. You can still find some new ones under the price of the Tamron.

Decided to go with the Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 VC. So far, a very good lens.Pictures are very sharp and the VC is very helpful shooting handheld. A fast and very quiet lens. A little heavy, but with the tripod ring off, that helps a little.

I too am considering this lens. I tried it out at a local camera store a couple of weeks ago and found the lens to be a very fast focusing lens, very sharp and quiet, and awesome bokeh. The pictures and coor rendition was great.
