D70s refusing to take picture

I am not a technologically adept individual. My camera initially was awesome. Then it began having problems where it would auto focus but I was unable to get the camera to actually finish the cycle of taking the picture. In the lower left control panel it shows an -E - even when the camera is off. There are other times when when I can’t even get it to auto focus. Need help....

Sometimes cleaning the contacts on the camera and lens will help, carefully - lint free, a little alcohol.

next step, remove battery for a while and then reinstall

next step, two green button reset to reset some AF mode or some other permissive accidentally changed.

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

On page 111 of the Nikon D70s User's Manual is the procedure for the Two-Button Reset that will restore many of the camera's settings to their default values. You can also use the Menu Reset command, described on page 135, to return Custom Settings to their default values. Lastly, page 200 describes the use of the Reset Switch, if all else fails.

Lower left, or lower right? If you see a -E- (dash E dash) in the lower right where the 292 is in the image below, that means there is no memory card in your camera, or the card is not firmly seated, or the contacts are dirty, or the card is defective.
