I went and ordered through the military exchange a D610. So that means that Nikon will have a fantastic 4th of July sale on the D750! I am really looking forward to it.

Well, thank you very much if they do have a sale on the D750!! ;)

My local exchange actually has a D610 on display. The folks at the counter said that hardly no one ever asks about it. But they aren't budging on their price, and from what I recall, it is a steep one!

Nice one Rich and congrats I'm still hoping to have a D7100 or D7200 depending on price when I meet you again next Feb
I considered a D7200, but I thought full frame would be better for my trip to Europe this fall. Besides my D7100 is a fine camera and I think I will keep it for a long time. Looking forward to another get together next year, it will be good.

My exchange has no Nikon FX cameras on hand. I don't mind ordering it form them, I got the current sale price and I saved over $100 in taxes so I can wait a few days for it to show up at my door.

That sounds like a great deal, then. When I ask about online or local deals, my local exchange looks for and finds every excuse to not price match it. Last year, I purchased nearly $2500 worth of electronics downtown because my BX wouldn't agree to the lower price. (They'll hold on to some of the stuff so long that it will end up with 75% discount stickers on it before it moves.) They don't usually stock them, but they had a Nikon sale a while back and got in several FX bodies for the event.

That is sad they give you a hard time about price matching. I never tried it as it is sometimes cheaper go buy downtown since it is almost an 80 mile round trip. I would E-mail AAFES and complain about the staff and see what happens.

Well, it will be here tomorrow. Now, what would be a good general purpose lens for walking around Europe with? The manual says I can use my DX lenses but I read some good, and some ok reviews about the Nikkor AF-S 24-85mm F3.5/4.5G kit lens.

Please don't waste money or time with a DX lens, except in very specific circumstances. You're about to have FX digital capabilities in your hands! You will LOVE it! You can make photos look like movie stills.

For walking around Europe, my first choice would be the Nikon 28-300mm, 3.5-5.6 VR. Admittedly, not the absolute sharpest lens, but it will give you FX coverage and maximum flexibility for capturing almost anything you see. On the other hand, if your plan is to set your camera on a tripod and record dark cathedral interiors in bracketed sets to merge later in Photoshop, this isn't that tack sharp lens. For walking around, this lens has a tab that locks it at 28mm so it doesn't slide open to 300 while hanging around your neck. Also, I recommend a Black Rapid strap instead of what comes with the camera. Much more comfortable for wandering around.

Here are some sample shots I got in NYC with a D600 and this lens:

What's your budget for this lens? Even though I'm not a fan (and neither is DXO, really) people seem to love the Nikon 24-120mm f/4 G ED VR so you might want to consider it as your general purpose, go-to lens.

Also, having recently gone from DX to FX, the idea of using DX glass at first really appealed to me as well. Let me tell you... I could NOT get FX glass on my D750 soon enough. Oh sure, DX glass on your FX body sounds good, at least on paper, but... In practice? It's just not.

I have to agree with Horoscope Fish on the Nikkor 24-120 f/4. I got to try a D750 out and it had this lens attached. It was very comfortable, and seemed to produce excellent image quality.

Nikon seems to think so, as well, making it the company bundled lens for the D750. The best way to get it though is in the Nikon bundle though...

I am going to look into this 24-120mm f4 lens. Sounds about perfect for my trip.
I have this lens and I enjoy it. 24-120 gives you great range for a walk around lens. Here are some shots I took with it.

They all came out pretty sharp and acceptable to me. It is a very good lens.

I just purchased the Nikon 24-70 from a man on craigslist for $1000 (talked him down from $1400) and am really seeing the sharpness that people always talk about with this lens. It also feels a little more solidly built than the 24-120. I also LOVE the bokeh it produces. If you could spend a few 100 more bucks,I would recommend the 24-70 over the 24-120. You will lose some range but there is a reason many pros use the 24-70. It is fantastic!

I also just booked my first product shoot. Will be shooting candles that he sells on amazon and his website. So looking forward to this.
