Re: Finally pulled the trigger on a d610

Can someone tell me what the best grip for this camera is?. Should I go for the true Nikon or get 3rd party?

I use the Pixel on my 600 and it's fine. I have the Nikon grip on my D7000 and it is not the same quality of the Nikon grip I used for 8 years on my D100. That's why I decided to give the aftermarket a try. Seven months in and I have no regrets on buying the Pixel and saving $160.

John - why are you selling your 7100? Buying FX?

I've only used Nikon grips for my cameras. From what I've seen the 3rd party grips are good but your chances of getting a lemon are higher. Get a decent warranty on any grip and you should be good.

I did a bit of researching before I got a grip for my D3100.I chose the Bowers pro grip.Decent ratings and the price wasn't bad at all.

I currently have a D610 as well, however i found the grip too small for me. I like the D800 much better, especially for heavy lenses. I have a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 which is quite bulky, and the d610 grip feels even smaller once I try to keep the camera in one hand.

Will the gripp make it better? Currently my small finger is down from D610's grip.

I also use the AE/AF lock button as AF-on the decouple the focusing from the shutter release button. For portrait photographs it is almost impossible to push (maybe I have a big nose :D), so I am hoping this problem to be solved with the purchase of the grip..... The grip has the dedicated button as well. Any experiences?

Cheers!

which grip is too small for you? the camera grip or battery grip you add on? youre not being specific. ergonomics aside, the D600 with battery grip is almost the same height and size as a D3. besides it having the option of longer power to shoot, the extra weight of the battery grip gives stability when using heavy lenses that want to pull it down from the front. and it will give your hand a bigger area so all your fingers can be used to grip and balance. its also easier if you need to work with a tripod.

the D800 is huge with a battery grip. bigger than the D3/D3x/D3s/D4. its huge and sticks out like a sore thumb. what I dont like is even with the battery grip attached, its still weighs too little. I can opt to use AA NIMH batteries in the lower grip but since I have 3 lithium rechargeable EN-EL15 batts I dont want to use any new energizer batteries I have in closed packages.

and it doesnt feel as perfectly balanced as my D3. the weight in the one piece pro bodies is spread out perfectly and its not the same with body/battery grip cameras. also the body/battery grip combo doesnt feel as good as the one piece pro bodies. it feels so out of place when using it. I dont even have to look but when im shooting it kind of kills my concentration a little when I pick it up and can feel the 2 different pieces. my grip does have an AF/AE button on the battery grip.

I do plan on getting the D800 for video purposes but at the moment, that 4 fps is killing it for me. those morons in japan should have at least given it a boost if you shoot with the battery grip or if you lower the rez. but 4 fps is making me flacid. the D600 is just barely borderline for me. that D3 is just a monster.

go to 5:30 and see the side by side. that D800 is huge with a grip. it will feel out of place and I have to accept this as I plan on getting it. I wish nikon would bring out a D800 with a 24mp camera with 8fps and fastish AF. the D600 feels like a toy but for now thats what I have to deal with. its a new camera for me and I still cant trust it.

Hi!
Sorry for leaving obscurity. I meant that the d610 body's grip is small for my hand a bit. Not the mountable battery grip!
I watched the movie and yes. You are right. the D800 is superbig with the grip, but I am not sure if it would be a case with the D610. I will look at that later, or maybe somebody will share the experience.
Thanks for the great answer!

So I ended up with a Zeikos Grip for the 610. I do not have experience with other grips to compare, but this one seems to be well made. It has a nice feel to it. the shutter release takes a little less pressure than the stock Nikon. The fit is excellent and when tightened down does not rock or move at all. The main and sub command dials are nice, although they are not quite as tight as the ones on the camera. Overall I am happy with it so far, we will have to see how well it stands up over time.

If you are set up for your camera to use AE/AF Lock as your AF-ON button does the grip work as the AF-ON button?

If you plan to use a BlackRapid style strap (mounting via the tripod socket) I strongly recommend the NIKON brand grip.
I've read too many reviews/stories where the casing can pull apart on the third party grips.

This is good to know....I have a Vello grip right now on my 610 and use this style strap. It "feels" pretty solid but I think I'm just going to bite it and buy the Nikon grip...

Wow so much! More or less the same as the nikon original. U should have just bought the nikon. Its only a few bucks more :)

I guess if you think $300 is only a few bucks more. A genuine Nikon MB-D14 retails for $349 here in Canada. There are several third party options for well under $100, many under $50. I'm reading this post because I will be buying one of these third party versions. not sure which one yet but not a Nikon that's for sure.
