The new 18-55 lenses they are putting on the DX cameras are collapsible. The button on those locks the lens closed for transport and storage.

I think it would be the drive for the autofocus screw drive, if the D5500 had an AF motor. Since it does not, this is just a place holder for the screw drive mechanism.

No Don, look at the metal ring where the lens mounts. There is a screw in the 8 o'clock position. To the left of that (which on the picture doesn't look like your typical button) is a button. To be fair, it's almost like a lever, but it does press in.
No it doesn't get depressed that I can see. And I can't tell if it does anything when I press it.
