Viewfinder display always on

When I look through the viewfinder with the camera turned off, the outline of the focusing area is always there and so are the grid lines if I have them turned on. Only if I remove the battery does the viewfinder go blank. The focusing squares and all the other viewfinder info does go on and off as expected. Is this normal? I have had the camera for a year and a half, but cannot say if it was always this way. Thank you.

On my D3200 I can see the control points marks with the battery in or out.

On my D7100, a clear screen with the battery out. lines in the view finder with the battery in.

That sounds normal. I think your camera(s) are fine.

Many thanks! This seems like a great site, I'm sure I will learn a lot. Now if I can just figure out how to make the enter key give me a new line, all will be well.
