new d5100 imark on mirror?

I have a new d5100 bought from jessops a few days ago. i have put the lens on when i first bought it and left it on until today. for the first time i thought i would go through my manual and look at the buttons and see what they do etc. i read that dirt is a no no on entering the camera so thought i would look at mine and have a look at the mirror, i have noticed a sort of mark all around the edge of the miror a bit like a smudge but in a square pattern and straight and equal all around the mirror. is this a normal mark as it looks in a perfect shape to be a smudge

Do you see it through the viewfinder? Can you post a picture (if you have another camera )

It may well be just the sub assembly / AF module showing through the glass

I know it looks like a reflection but when i move it around it looks a lot like a mark on the mirror

Take it back to where you got it and ask them to correct it or give you another camera, the mirror is very fragile and if it has a mark it won't come off.

I have looked up other threads on here and other newbies have had the same thoughts as me. as this is a new camera i thought the mirror would be spotless but it seems the get like a filmy substance around the sides. should i take it back and show them or are most new ones filmy

If it's all equal around the mirror, I would guess it's normal. Does it interfere with your pictures? Is the camera working OK? If it is, stop looking at the camera and look through it to take pictures. The camera is not made to be looked at, but used as a photography tools. If it ain't broken, don't fix it.
