Ron, are you talking viewfinder or Live View screen?? I have not had any issues with seeing via viewfinder in my 5100...

I've had the same problem, and "solved" it by opening up the live view screen and looking at my settings there instead of in the viewfinder. Obviously that won't work if you need to make adjustments quickly, but it's worked for me for stills & landscapes.

THIS LOOKS LIKE A SOLUTION FOR MY PROBLEM, I FOUND IT WHILE LOOKING AT A D600 POST IN FLICKR.
CHANGE OUT THE RECTANGULAR EYE PIECE FOR A ROUND ONE.

I understand that this eye piece stops you opening the lcd screen on the 5100 am I right?
