Vivitar 75-205mm f3.8 Macro Focusing Mounted on D5100

Hey guys, This is my first post and it's about the main reason I joined this forum.
Today I bought a used Vivitar 75-205mm f3.8 Macro Focusing Lens that easily and successfully mounts on my D5100 but here's the issue. Even though it mounts and shoots, it has a horrible time focusing and the shots a usually extremely grainy.
Do you guys have any idea what might be causing this or how to fix it?

Cheers

Im pretty sure that this will not auto focus on ur cam - i would imagine you know that. You need to put your cam in m mode. There will be no metering with this lense. It's going to be trial and error. You perhaps have grainy pics because of high iso

I know that it's manual focus, and after reading your post I started playing with the ISO. I can get non grainy shots but their extremely dark in exchange.
I was planning on using this lens to shoot a 10th wedding anniversary on Saturday so hopefully I'll figure it out soon.

Use your kit lens to meter the camera and then copy those settings when you use your vivitar. It won't be bang on, but you can work backwards or forwards from there.

Supposed to be a very sharp lens, i would want to be a bit more at ease with it before i shot some ones one and only 10th wedding anniversary, these type of events can be difficult and struggling with a lens wont help.

I'm not overly excited about shooting this event. My boss let me know last minute so all I had on hand was my 18-55mm. I felt like that wasn't enough so I picked up the 75-205mm used today and thought I could get used to it by saturday... guess I was wrong.

Also thanks to everyone for the warm welcome and advice.

You will probaly enjoy covering the event more if you are relaxed and using gear you are familiar with, settle for some cropping and most of all have fun.hope it goes well.

I have also bought the same lens for my Nikon d5200 but the issue is that I am not able to mount it on the camera. Did you do something different to mount it? Please help..I want to use this lens
