name style change

Yep, I'm a fairly new at taking photos with this new to me d5100.
Yesterday I've noticed that the camera has changed the name of pics saved.
i.e. what was once DSC_0001 has now become _DCS0001.
My first question is of course - is there anything I should be concerned about?
And then, what should I do or how do I change it back, or should I even worry about it?
Thanks.

Someone mentioned earlier this week that a Japanese magazine predicted a d7200 and even may be a d9000.

Woody, do not have my manual handy but you can adjust the numbering system within the camera menus. Grab your manual and check it out..

You can have it number from 001 each time, continuous numbering etc ... It is in the manual... You will set it from the MENU button on the left side..

I suspect you changed from shooting JPEG to RAW. Most Nikon's will list JPEG files differently than RAW files. I also believe there is an option in your menus of what to name the files and what number to start with. I know the D7000 and D800 have this ability.

Thanks, now that you say that I realized that I did make some changes when I was fiddling with the menu the other day. Like I said still fairly new at this. But loving every minute of it!!

The camera adjusts based on the RGB space you shoot in. The default prefix is 'DSC' though you can change it (I use a format that goes 'JNY' where J is my initial, N is the first digit in the camera body number (6-D600, 7-D7000, 9-D90) and Y is the number of times I've looped back over the 0000-9999 counter - so I never have to worry about duplicate file names). With sRGB it will name files 'DSC_' and with Adobe RGB it does '_DSC'. Not sure exactly why they do this unless it helps the camera interpolate something. I started out hating a leading '_', but I've grown used to it. I do not believe you can change this.

Jake, thanks for that... I knew there were various settings and options and steered to the manual but also had forgotten about that specific difference .. Thanks for jumping in with the correct answer!

I recently looped over the 9999 counter and I'd REALLY like to change the 'DSC' prefix as mentioned above, but I've searched through the manual and I can't find how to change it.

Also, I've read posts on other forums which say it can't be changed on the D5100, but I'm hoping those posts are wrong. :)

In case some of you are curious, DSC stands for Digital Still Camera. And yes, it can be changed. On my D40, I use my initials to name some of my files.

I don't know whether or not a D5100 will allow you to change the file naming but if it does, here's a great tutorial by Darrell Young on how you do it.

The Nikon Companion: Using Nikon's File Naming and File Number Sequence in a Clever Way

It was in Darrell's book on the D7000 that I first heard this advice. Having had 4 Nikons floating around at one time or another, it's helped a LOT. Unfortunately, I cannot do it with my D90, so perhaps you can't with the D5100? It's a great feature. The only other option would be to force a rename on import to your computer, which I know that Lightroom supports.

How in the world do you change it to your JNY format? I'd like to do someting similar, but can't find in the menu how to do this.

Hello ,

A simple yes it can be done or no it can't be done. I have been attempting to change the prefix on my D5100 just like others are asking in this thread. The manual does not have anything in changing the three letters. No menus show the ability to change the filename. The firmware from the D5100 says A 1.00, B 1.00 L 1.003. The Nikon website says there is version 1.02 do I need to upgrade to get this featiure?

Thanks.

Thanks Don for the reply. Horoscope Fish says it can't be done on the D5100. I will upgrade the firmware anyway.
