    D5 Shutter speed challenge

This is probably a dumb question, but after going through the settings as well as the manual, I'm stumped. I probably managed to change a setting and I just can't figure out how to get out of this mode.

When I turn the camera on and am in S, the shutter speed reeds x250 and will go no faster. In A, M or P it shows 125 and will also go no faster. How do I get back to being able to use the full range of shutter speeds?

    Thanks in advance

That is the flash synch setting. You do not say if you have speedlight attached on the camera or if the built-in flash is up. But if a flash is active, that is the shutter speed it wants to use.

Correction, no built-in flash on a D5. You activated something in the menu to make the camera believe a flash is in the hot-shoe.

In 'M' it still says x250.

No flash is attached. When I go into 'shooting menu', the flash control is grayed out.

    Shutter-speed and aperture lock | Nikon D5 User Manual | Page 162 / 424 (manualsdir.com)

You've obviously assigned that function to a button... Back track thru this section and un-assign or turn off the lock... You can probably see the little "L" icon in the LCD screen next to the shutter speed.

I figured it out. I put it in M and kept rotating the shutter speed dial. The speeds got longer and then the speeds started climbing until it went through all the speeds through 8000. How I managed to get to the x250, I have no idea. If any of you find yourself in a a similar 'stupid human trick', you'll know wha to do.

You are right, the shutter speed wheel will go from 30sec to "Bulb" to the final position which is the flash synch shutter setting. I work in the 25sec and bulb range enough that I should have remembered that. But then I also assumed you tried spinning the wheel in both directions.
