Hello!

I just joined this list and it looks like it will be very useful, but I need to start with a question.

I am an American living in India, and am headed to Nepal in five days. Of course, my camera picked today to go out. It still shoots, but the view screen won't show anything. (It comes on briefly when I turn the camera on, then goes blank. There's not enough time to press any buttons or do anything.) I'm sure it's because I've been shooting in the monsoons here in India :-(, but there are no repair facilities nearby in India that could get it done in three days.

So, I'm wondering if there's anything I can check myself before I head from the Kathmandu airport to whatever camera shop can fix it there. (I looked on the Nikon site, and don't see any official service centers in the entire country.)

I know, I know, don't take the camera out in the rain. :-( I've got a dry bag, but this is monsoon season and as hard as I try, I'm bad at keeping it dry.

Or can I just pretend I'm doing it old school, and not look at the pics until I get back to my computer.

Thanks for helping out a newbie who does stupid things.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum and sorry you are having problems. You are correct that it was probably caused by the rain. I am not sure anything less than a trip back to Nikon will fix it. For you next camera I would suggest moving up to something that is weather resistant which is anything above the D7000. The D7100 is a real bargain now since the D7200 and D7500 have come out. I have the D7100 that my wife now shoots and have gotten caught out in the rain with and it did just fine. You still do not want to get them any wetter than you have to but the occasional rain will not hurt it.

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.

I agree with Don's comment completely. You might consider getting some desiccant packs and placing them with your camera. Alternately, you could store your camera in some raw, uncooked rice to try to absorb some of the moisture.

Thanks, guys.

That's not what I wanted to hear but what I expected. :-(

I do have desiccant in the dry bag, and tried to dry it out once I got back from the last big rainstorm, but I'll try the rice and see if that helps. (It's cheap here, so I can cover the whole camera.)

I'm living VERY cheaply these days (hence India), but I'll definitely look into the D7000 series. Maybe I can find a deal here or in Nepal. Or maybe I should just buy one of those dry covers you shoot through.

<sigh>

Anyway, I'll see what happens on my trek today, and if I can remember how to shoot w/out looking at the pics. <g>

Nope, not seeing the pics is the problem. ☹️ I went old-school today and just shot, hoping the pics will come out.
I'm so hungry I stopped in a restaurant for dinner, so I haven't seen if anything came out or not.
And I had another question. (Please know I am a very non-techy old phart.)
Is there a way to connect the camera to my iPhone and see the pics there? If so, that would work until I can get it fixed.
(And I'm picking up a huge bag of rice tonight to see if that does anything.)
