Monitoring Audio with an external Rode mic.

Hey all,

I have a pretty basic setup, just added a Rode VideoMic Pro so I could record some decent audio when I shoot videos. I was wondering if there was a way I could monitor the audio? Without the mic I can obviously just plug in some headphones and listen that way. But the Rode mic using a mini jack, and so I can't use headphones.

I doubt I can get a splitter, so does anyone know of a good way of monitoring the audio, so I don't have any negative surprising when I come to view/edit the footage?

Thanks!

What model camera body do you have?
My D5200 has no provision for monitoring sound, but it does have an external mic jack.

My D610 has both a jack for a external mic and for headphones. The 610 makes the solution easy.

If you're serious about quality sound recording, then using the camera's audio recorder is wasting your time. Use an external audio recorder... then you can plug in simple headphones to monitor the audio... Sescom makes balanced cables for different cameras/recorder combos to connect your camera directly to an external recorder... plug your expensive Mic into a real recorder...

google "syncing an H4n to a Nikon camera"

You'll get several links to videos that illustrate the concept.

That was my problem, the camera's audio recorder wasn't great at all. I am thinking of doing exactly that - use my external mic and plug that into my external audio recorder, headphones into that to monitor the sound, and then just sync it with a clap or something else that would spike the sound wavelength to sync it.
