Wide angle lens for D3100

I am looking for a wide angle lens for my D3100.

I purchased a Nikon Lens on Amazon, but apparently, I can't read or pay attention as it was a mount for a different Nikon camera.

I want something that I can do scenery shots with. I have great places to take some wide angle shots, but the 18-55 lens that comes standard isn't giving me great quality (could be my fault too).

Thanks for any help!

Welcome

but the 18-55 lens that comes standard isn't giving me great quality (could be my fault too).

If you feel your at fault with your currant lens how will another be better...

I have the Nikon 16-35mm F4 that does the job for me...it's not cheap, I use it for landscapes and portraits..

Here's link to a few landscapes taken with it..

Tokina 11-16 is amazing, Nikkor 10-24, sigma 10-20. All great, sigma is cheapest, but Nikon and Tokina are the best and Tokina is next cheapest but everyone loves the Tokina 11-16. It is a fantastic wide angle lens!

Thanks. I am looking on Amazon and I see several options for a Tokina.

I am assuming, based on what you described, that THIS is the lens you were speaking of?

To pedroj. Valid question. It was an attempt at self-deprecating humor. Obviously, it failed. I'm sure my photography skills have a TON of room for improvement. But I have noticed much better quality in the photos I take with my 35mm and 50-300 vs the OOB 18-55. Not to mention, the 18mm doesn't quite get as wide an angle as I would like. Thanks for the input though. I appreciate it.

I just received a Sigma 10-20mm late yesterday, too late to try out. Based on price, input and reviews, I thought it was the best wide angle for the money (from Amazon). I wanted it for what you describe. Wide angle scenery.

I read something the other day about wide angle lenses. Basically the guy was saying that the minute he puts a wide angle on he asks himself the question "where's the foreground?" That sounds like an interesting composition trick I haven't tried it yet myself but I thought I would pass it along.

@JohnFrench - I would love to know what you think. It seems like there was definitely a price difference with the Sigma. Let me know what you think as far as the quality. Thanks!

@Eye-level - Interesting. I like that bit. I am newerish to photography. Composition of shots is still something I work on/struggle with. I do a lot of night photography. There isn't so much depth to capture in those photographs as feeling. But I wonder if I could in any way apply that to landscapes and night shots. Thanks for the feedback. Great food for thought!!

Oh it definitely will apply to Landscapes for sure. Eg. an interesting piece of driftwood or a stone or something right in the foreground that leads the eye into the background which might be a mountain or whatever. Classic landscape composition.

Thetravelinggentleman, that is the one! But, considering that you have a D3100, which does NOT have an auto-focus motor in the camera body, you should try to purchase the newer version of the Tokina lens that has a motor in it. If your only doing landscape photography with it, having the non-auto focus one is no big deal because it is pretty easy to focus in landscape photography manually. But, if you prefer AF or are doing other types of photography with the wide-angle lens, then get the newer model, because you will be able to AF with it. When you go to the link that you posted for me to see, you look down and there will be a box that says: This is the newer model of this item, this is the link to it: Amazon.com: Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X116 Pro DX II Digital Zoom Lens (AF-S Motor) (for Nikon Cameras): TOKINA: Camera & Photo

I hope this helps!
