    SD Card

So does the D3100 require a Class 6+ SD card to optimize HD video recordings or is there a difference using a lower class SD card like a Class 4?

While I am not specifically familiar with the D3100, you should be able to use a class 4 card. The obvious advantage is that the higher class cards write faster. You should be able to get video on the class 4 without a problem though. Even in still photography, you have a buffer that will hold multiple pictures allowing you to shoot and let the card catch up. Unless you are shooting a ton of pictures in high burst mode, you will be fine with a class 4. I have both for my D90 and notice little difference when I shoot.
For an economical card, Sam's Club has a Toshiba class 4 for $20 that both my father and I have and it works great. He has a D80 and I have the D90.
    Hope that helps.
P.S. Your user manual should also let you know if there is a specific requirement for HD video, but again, I doubt it.

Thanks for giving me your opinion. I was thinking about getting a class 6, but now I feel as if a class 4 is good enough for my needs as of now. I'm actually not that worried about writing speed at the moment so I think my class 4 will do for now.

    Thanks again!

according to everything I've read about this camera it does need a class 6 or faster to record HD movies, with a slower card it will turn off during filming.
I have not tried this, but have read it on a few different web sites and in the user manual.

I'll second that, I don't have my manual in front of me however I do believe you need class 6 or better to get the full 10 minute movies.
