Can you turn the live screen display off completely?

I've just been attempting to shoot some shots of the night sky and, apart from the fact that I was thwarted by clouds, I've had a problem with the live screen display.

I prefer using the viewfinder, but, although I have live view turned off, there is still a display (settings etc) that is illuminated, making it difficult to see through the viewfinder (as the display is shining right below your eye). This isn't a problem in daylight, but a real problem in the dark.

So, as per thread title, is there a way to turn the display off completely and just use the information in the viewfinder?

You should be able to turn the display off in the Setup Menu under "Auto Info Display"
You can also adjust the brightness in the same Menu under LCD Brightness.

A lot of people including me do not look at the forum you posted in so they do not realize what camera you are shooting. It helps if you fill out that information in your profile. Make it easier on everyone and helps you get the right information.

You can do that at http://nikonites.com/profile.php?do=editprofile

thanks
