Re: external flash

Please be more specific> What exactly do you mean by "how do I use"? If you mean can you use other brands of flash, then the answer is yes, but they won't function as well as a Nikon brand flash made specifically for Nikon cameras. A good one that is relatively inexpensive is the SB400.

Hi, I have two questions in relation to external flash on D40, 1) can TTL function when using old AI lenses?, and 2) what is the risk of using old flashes (made for SLRs) on newer DSLR bodies?

Based on Nikon's stated lens compatibility, it looks like:
1) No. With AI lenses on the D40, the exposure meter will not work, and without exposure information, TTL can't work.

and

2) Check their trigger voltage. Old flashes can push many hundreds of volts across the contacts, which will tend to release the Magic Smoke that makes your hot-shoe work. If the voltage is within spec (5 volts is almost always safe, but you would probably need to check the manual or other online resources to see if the D40 can take anything more than that), then you can use most old flashes as a manual flash*.

* I assume no responsibility for your camera's safety when using Random X old flash. Be sure to do appropriate research.
