What will Raw do for me?

I guess this forum must be the place for this...

FWIW, I put a short video online about Why Shoot Raw? Because, my own notion is that beginners simply don't have any idea of what Raw can do for their pictures, no clue how they would use Raw. The word EDIT is involved, which scares away many, but it is so easy, and so powerful. For example, White Balance is never correct, but it is easy to fix. Beginners do need to work on the basics first, but then Raw can do so much for us.

Video is NOT my thing, but I just whipped out a quicky short amateurish video to try to show the first ideas of Raw. Not deep, just fast. I'm hoping it can give a better impression of the goal.

EDIT: updated video with second try - still same material

You mention "white balance is never correct". Can you also maybe do a short tutorial on white balance, and why it is never correct out of camera, and how to correct it . . . correctly?

Good tutorial Wayne. I still regret and could never forgive why I read and followed Ken Rockwell's tutorials when I first started photography with my D80. His suggestion to just use jpg was a horrible suggestion that I regret following.

Not a video, but see White Balance Correction, with or without Raw

Thanks Glenn. Raw is not Day One stuff for beginners, they need to work to learn the basics first. But I cannot imagine giving up Raw now. It would be like dark room chemicals, I think I might give it up first. :)

In my opinion, if you really care about the color depth (RAW works with up to 16-bit color, vs. 8-bit for JPG), white balance and tonal range of your photos, and getting the most image quality you can out of the DSLR you paid so dearly for, you have to shoot RAW.

Nice tutorial Wayne. I think it might remove some fear for someone that has been afraid of it.

I would never shoot only jpegs.

Thanks guys, you are kind. I appreciate the comments, but video is hard, and I do wish it had come out a little more polished. :) A few misspeaks and stumbles, and a few significant points forgotten to mention. In that respect, a good show maybe. :)

I know the first step is a script, but I can't, I seem unable, I always quickly ignore it, and just wing it. I think the key must be that a script has to involve many short practiced takes, but my style is to just start and plan as I go. And I know it has to be short, but short just won't do it. :)

And I feel sure all of you already know all about Raw. Not sure how to reach those with no clue how much Raw can do for them.

That's the problem Wayne. You preaching to the choir. But I think tutorials like yours sure helps. We almost need to restate the question and ask, "what will you achieve with raw"

I replaced this video (first post in this thread) with a second try, hopefully improved. However, the first 20 or 30 seconds are blurred, then it clears up OK. I think that must be YouTube ? The original here is fine, no evidence of that.
