FREE Nikon tethering software

This could be the answer for me. My wife wants me to shoot the annual Teachers softball game tomorrow night. It is to raise money for a good cause every year and is always very funny. most of what is shot is them at bat so I could do a basic setup on the tripod and tether to the computer and shoot from there sitting in a chair.

going to log off now ans set it up and play with it. Will give a full review of it ASAP

All I can say is WOW

Took 5 minutes to set up and get running on my D5100. It can do what looks like everything including Focus stacking. That is one I will have to play with a little more. You can change everything as far as I could tell in a few minutes. Shooting modes, focus manually or auto focus.

Even if you don't know if you would ever use it I would download it and play with it.

Thanks to John Young for the link.

Just played with bracketing. Bracketing with the D5100 is very limiting. It will only do three shots. With this software it looks like you could do up to 21 shots at 1/2 stop increments. Or you can set each shot you do want like -2, -1, -1/2, 0, 1, 2 ,3 ,4 ,5 . Any combination that you want. Very flexible and easy to do.

Interesting so the software actually gives you more control that using the controls on the camera ?

Or have I got that wrong ?

Have you checked out Sofortbild, sounds similar and it runs on a Mac. It's pretty slick, but I haven't done more than play with it.

I'm not going to have time to play around with this program for at least a week. If some one messes around with the focus stacking let us know your thoughts please. This program is free and beats the price of Helicon Focus if it performs as well.

Thanks for the link John, this looks promising!

It only does the shooting and incremental focusing. The rest will still have to done in your favorite software. I tried it earlier and it did do that. You can pick the number of shots and the focus increments. Will have to play a bit more to see what the increments are.

Everything seems to work for my D40 except live view and image capture LOL.

I can connect and alter my camera settings through the interface as well as operate the shutter.
No live view and the image is not captured :(

Looks like I am coming down in favour of Helicon Remote and Helicon Focus for taking stacked photos and stacking them. It's not free, though. This was the first photo I took (I'm about to play some more...):

Okay, here's the rough result (straight from camera with just some Aperture auto-adjust). I set it to take 103 photos, of which I rendered some 95. It needs some work, clearly, but I can see where I'm going.
