Now on a Mac... LR, ON1, or something else?

I have used photoshop and lightroom on my windows computer for quite some time. I recently purchased a new computer and went with a Mac this time. I would not have a problem using the same software again, except that now you can only get LR as a subscription. I like Lr very much, but balk at having to pay ten bucks a month EVERY month. I would sure appreciate some input on what might be a good program to use for post production.

I havent figured out how to change my profile, but I am now using a D850 instead of the D7000 as shown. My lens habit has grown also, but we wont discuss that. Well, not now maybe. Update: Marilynne showed me how, so now my profile has been updated.

Go into your Settings, scroll down to edit profile, scroll down to Camera. You can make your change there. Remember to hit SAVE CHANGES when complete.

Please keep in mind the $10 per month isn't just for Lightroom. It includes the full version of Photoshop, Camera RAW, and Bridge. I too have a stand alone copy of Lightroom, but that version no longer gets updated. The subscription gets updated with the latest features for all of the software that is included. So I guess your version of LR doesn't support your OS for Mac?

Maybe a subscription based service just isn't for you. And that's your choice. Personally I don't have experience with other comparable software so I hope someone else here will be able to give you some suggestions for options. :)

I did the same thing just a few months ago. I bought an iMac 27 5k. I was already in the subscription mode. I was very reluctant to switch, but after a while I took the plunge and with the hot rod iMac I am really happy. The latest upgrades, and many that I have had for a year or more, work so much better.

I have been trying out Capture 1 too but the learning curve has been a bit steep. I am comfortable with LR and I like the changes that allows more color fine timing.

Danno,

How are you enjoying the mac? Got any cool hot keys? Thank you for the input. I have never tried Capture.

I love it. I was not sure how it would go, but between my Son and a number of folks here I decided to take the leap. I am still learning so the hotkeys are still a bit elusive because I have memory issues, but I plod along and over time things stick...;)

The 64 GIG of Ram and the i7 processor have sped up LR so nicely. So for someone who said the only Apple that they would ever have is a Beatles Record... I now have an iMac and a iPad... Who knew...

To me, $10 a month for Photoshop and Lightroom is a bargain. I think it's the best option, too. I will add that I also use Topaz DeNoise and Sharpen as plug-ins in Lightroom. To me, those are the expensive ones. Currently $80 and free updates are only for a year or something like that.

Here's a tip for you new Mac users.

Double-clicking on an image with Finder will(should) open the image in "Preview". Mac's own built in Editor... Explore its options... It has a mini Camera Raw type editor, but most handy it lets you crop and resize an image in about 3 clicks. Now, I don't suggest you use as a real editor for your photos, but use it for those quick edits to pic.s that you download or take with a cell phone and want to post to the web.... that only accepts certain small sized images... Even has a balloon feature that you can use to add some quick text to an image...

Don't forget Nikon's software. NX Studio has evolved to somewhat being more user friendly and it's the only software that will let you benefit from Nikon's colour science when it comes to interpreting NEF files. You can also use it as a database for your images. And it's FREE! But since I already have so many images indexed in LR, I will keep paying the 10$/month. For me who doesn't drink nor smoke, it's just pocket money and I'm always using the latest software upgrades.

Just my 2 cents.
