Im using windows and often take photos in both landscape and portrait aspects, when I load the files to my pc, it often takes me ages to sort through them and rotate them to the correct orientation
Is there some kind of software that can do this automatically for me?

You should specify which camera, and which PC photo software. Then maybe someone using the same can offer suggestions.

Mine (D300 and D800 cameras, and Photoshop) always come out correctly oriented automatically. Also my wifes little compact camera comes out correct automatically. There is a flag in the file that tells which way the camera was oriented, which the photo editor should honor. I think yours should be automatic too, and cannot offer any reason why it is not.

There is also a camera Display Setting of Rotate Tall, which affects how it is rotated on the rear LCD. Rotate Tall never seems any advantage, and it does not affect how the PC software shows it.

Just checked some shots made with the D3200. Neither Windows Explorer nor Microsoft Picture Manager read the orientation correctly, but show all photos horizontal. View NX2 and Photoshop Elements 11 correctly oriented the same photos. I did notice that in the PSE Open File window, the orientation was horizontal, but it opened vertical.

I see now that is true of my Windows Explorer too, shows the D300 JPGs all horizontal, regardless of proper orientation. Adobe handles them all OK.

It is not true of Raw NEF files, which the Explorer is using a Nikon Codex to show those thumbnails, and they are correct.

It would seem the answer is better software.

infranview with added plugins - use it in thumbnail mode, wow, so much quicker than windows folders AND it orientates them correctly from the exif data!

That's weird, because mine come out oriented the correct way using those two programs.

There may be a switch, or it is possible that a piece of loaded software may add-on to the Windows function. I think if you reorient using either program they remember.
