Why Do You Use Flickr Instead of Photobucket?

There is another solution. Buy your own domain, and host your own pictures... then you can make your own rules instead of being dependent on someone else's handout...:tranquillity:

I had never used either till a couple of days ago. I set up a Flickr account. It did take a few minutes to figure out how to disable downloading files. (And yes I know they can still be copied) I am only uploading the same files I upload here which are 1000px on the long side and 72ppi so the quality for print would be pretty bad. I like that you can easily set up different sets of photos. That and a free Terabyte of free space should handle my needs.

I use my flicker account only for my bird shots. I use Photobucket and also Box and put different types in there to help me remember where something might be. To make it worse I use dropbox to share photos with family members. Then there is my terabyte HD on my home network that also does auto backup of my files every night.

I had a Photobucket account a few years ago and liked it for the most part. It worked well and it was really the only service I knew about at the time. I moved to 500px because it looked swankier. Really was no different than Photobucket in my opinion. I wasn't too keen on everyone trying to get me to "check out their photos" to boost their popularity. Finally joined Flickr a couple of years ago because I heard the communities are larger/better. IMO most of these services are fairly competitive so they are fairly close in what they offer. And they try to stay updated with their look, feel and navigation. When I do searches for a particular type of photo, Flickr seems to have what I'm looking for. So I plopped my money down on them.

I have both Photobucket and Flickr. Flicker is a much easier interface to use in my opinion, and that 1tb of storage is great. Photobucket doesn't get you as much. For my "artsy" stuff and daily shots, I use Flickr. For everything I put on my blog, vehicle pictures, travel report pics, etc., I use Photobucket simply because it offers more sharing options.

I googled them together and several of the posts from another photgraphy site said in the users agreement for Photobucket that any pictures you share on another website can be used for free by Photobucket. They pretty much lay claim to any photos that can be considered in the public domain. I was wondering if that had any bearing on why so many on here seem to use Flickr?

flickr provides various photo sizes option that can be used on some of the forum size restrictions.

At one time I had free accounts with both.

In the beginning Flickr did not allow you to link photos in forum posts but they soon changed that :)

A number of years ago I uploaded the same properly resized image to both and posted them to a forum for a image quality comparison.

The image from Photobucket was slightly better...

I closed my Flickr account.

It's like asking "why eating oranges when you have pears?". Well, different taste, I guess. Flickr is among many, so either use or don't. I use it, and I use Panoramio, too. Why Panoramio? Because I like my pics being punctually tagged and geo-located and (possibly) displayed in GoogleEarth...
