Windows 8

Just got a new desktop with Windows 8
I hate the look of it but the core is really great. The first thing I did was to load a program called Classic Shell Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements This makes it act more like Windows 7.

Windows 8 is really a pain but I am beginning to think it is a much better OS. It is fast and handles memory better I think. It just thakes a little while to get used to it. Also I think you will have a hard time finding a new computer running Windows 7

Don't fret too much. On Oct 7th MSFT will release an update that will restore the bulk of the desktop that most of us were used to in Windows 7. But other than the tile page and a different way of turning on/off the computer, 8 isn't that much different from 7 at all.

We have a company here called Argos dont know if they are any where else in the world, they are listing a few with 7 but obviously more running 8.

Make sure the memory is upgradable. It is also good to know how many memory modules you can put it it. The one I bought was 8GB and it had 4 slots. The arraignment of the installed memory was 2 4GB sticks. that left 2 slots free which made is easy to add 2 more modules to the memory. I added 2 8GB sticks so I now have 24GB of memory. I can eventually remove the original 8 GB (2x4) and add 2 8gb and get a max of 32GB of memory.

Just something to look at now that memory is so cheap

Yes... see Don's post above...

Unfortunately, that's a shell and can get a little buggy depending upon what you're running. But the coming upgrade to Windows 8.1 will return a lot of the things we like about Windows 7 and you will no longer have to go thru the tile interface. Also, with Windows 8 pro you can save your password and go straight to the tile screen, something that does happen with standard Windows 8. But it sounds like that will also be fixed in 8.1

Mark your calendars for Windows 8.1!

Note, I was wrong on the date, it's going to be out on Oct 17th, not the 7th.

I hate windows 8. I have got on to 2 computers with it and I was lost.

I did not like it when I first looked at it but after a couple of days you learn your way around. I like the way the os looks and operates in Windows 7 but by far Windows 8 is more efficient with memory and it is noticeably faster especially at start up and restarts.

That could possibly be cos it's a fresh install.
