Nikon AF-S Teleconverter

Right, the Nikon Teleconverters are sort of special, made for specific lenses. Tamron would be an unknown.

Compatibility chart:

Read the text at page top.

But you have another problem too, with any TC.

A 1.4x teleconverter reduces the light by one stop. A f/5.6 lens becomes f/8

A 2.0x teleconverter reduces the light by two stops. A f/5.6 lens becomes f/11

Nikon DSLR needs f/5.6 to focus. A few advanced newer models claim to focus at f/8.

The Tamron lens is f/4-f/5.6, already f/5.6, so except for the widest zoom, auto focus would be expected to be an issue. This is the "AF Limitations" noted in the compatibility chart, for f/5.6 lenses.

What about Kenko converters......?
What about them? I've heard both good and bad.

There are no simple answers when it comes to teleconverters I don't think.

The world of teleconverters is a dark and dangerous one. Most manufacturers have lens compatibility lists. I would urge you to be absolutely certain you know what you're going to get, and what you're going to lose, when purchasing one. For example, while a particular TC might mount to both your camera and lens, you may lose auto-focus at or below certain f/stops, possibly you will lose AF altogether. Metering can also be affected. The TC may, or may not be, compatible with any particular Nikon lens, even if the TC is specifically rated for Nikon lenses. It all depends. Regardless though, you *will* lose image quality when using a TC; how much will vary. You *will* lose between one and three f/stops on your lens as well depending on the magnification of the TC.

A few points. Firstly the Nikon won't physically fit the lens as it has a protrusion, at least my TC-20e did. Secondly, a Kenko or Tamron TC probably would fit. Finally, don't waste your money putting a teleconverter on a slowish general purpose lens as the quality of images will be poor. I recently got rid of my TC-20e as I wasn't happy with it on my 70-200 2.8 and that's a £2000 combo. You will get better results by cropping .
