Nikon View may be old but until now it has been great.

I just encountered a peculiar problem with Nikon View I've been using daily for several years through various Windows operating systems and W10 for at least five years.

It normally opens in whichever photo folder I was in last and immediately begins loading the folder's thumbnails.

Now it opens but apparently chokes instead of loading thumbnails, and immediately closes itself.

I ran chkdsk with a fix flag with no effect. I uninstalled and reinstalled the program to no effect. I tried restoring which ran achingly slow and ultimately failed. No updates or changes were made to the desktop during the overnight. The pc is clean of viruses and malware with realtime protection.

I see that a corrupt or missing runtime DLL application extension could be the culprit but if so, I can't imagine what could have happened between last night's shutdown and this morning's startup.

Thank you in advance for any insights.

Welcome!

Which view are you using? I use ViewNX-i and don't have any problems. I probably just jinxed myself.

Could the problem be on your memory card? Have you tried a different card?

Please let us know when/how you resolved your problem.

NX Studio is the software getting update support now. It really looks and feels similar to Nikon View but has more integrated features. Now I don't know if you are running old PC hardware but you imply it may be at least 5 years old. Is that factoring in to your resistance to updating?

I am running NX Studio on a 12 year old PC without issue.

You'll find that over the last few years, the two OS makers, MS and Apple, due to increased nefarious players, have been tightening their respective OS's to be more restrictive in allowing access to different areas and functions of the common computers... Just about every release/patch of the OS is limiting what and where a program can go/do on your computer... It's necessary for every software developer to continually monitor their respective software for these changes and make the necessary changes to their software if/when their sofwtare gets out of sync with MS and Apple's defined rules for "good behavior"... What this means for the average user is that they too, must comply with these changing eco-systems and follow along with the regularly changing updates to both their Operating systems, and the applications they use... otherwise, one or more elements may change that frequently cause their software to stop working as expected...

Software companies change their software predominantly because the underlying OS platforms have changed... It's like being in a choir and everybody is singing from the same song/music and the orchestra starts changing the instruments and timing... pretty soon, what was once beautiful no longer sounds good...

I have resisted updating but only because I've interpreted more features as changing the rhythm and direction the mouse takes to achieve bulk editing tasks. For example, if I used Photoshop to achieve the same end, it would take triple the amount of time. Leaner is better for my needs.

I understand what you're saying. I keep a Vista pc operational just to power an Epson scanner because Epson wouldn't update their software to work with Win 10. This current problem didn't appear to be caused by any updates. It was fine at shutdown and failed at the next startup. At first, I assumed it was a boot glitch caused by my own impatience until a reboot didn't solve it.

I get that. In my case I primarily use NX Studio as the means to import files and sometimes organize files. 85% of my workflow happens in RawTherapee following that. But prior to that it was Nikon View, and Picasa2 before that. I still miss Picasa sometimes but it went orphan over 10 years ago.

I did download NX Studio. The good news is Transfer 2 recognizes my P100 and the program has no trouble opening my photo folders. The bad news is that the program is the opposite of lean. It will be handy for fussy art projects but far too clumsy for streamlining web commerce tasks. Nikon View 6 allows me to edit fifty photos in 45 minutes. It took me a half-hour to edit two with NX. Granted, NX is robust and impressive. Thanks very much for the link.

Fred, What I need to know is the exact sequence of files that open when nkbrowser.exe opens. Then I could identify which file is interrupting the sequence. It opens successfully on my two laps and gf’s pc. I don’t know how to see such a log file. I just assume that such a log must exist. Can you suggest a direction? Thank you.

Thank you, Marilynne.

The package is Nikon View 6. The file that initiates opening is nkvbrowser.exe.

I don't think the .exe references the memory card until the program is functional and displays the Tools menu.

I certainly will post the details when solved.

Thanks again.

Solved. After three weeks of research and trying everything that was suggested on five forums, I gave up and went to Msoft support chat. I gave the specialist control. He tried for an hour and finally suggested downloading a fresh copy of Windows 10 and overriding my copy. After a reinstall of Nikon View 6 it is working as intended.
