So I made the jump from the D7100 to the D800. I feel like there is a lot to learn. What should be the first things I do when I get the D800? I heard that I should calibrate the lenses using LensAlign? I also heard I should do the autofocus test to see if there are any issues.

I want to get crisp clear shots with this camera. Do you recommend any websites to get the best out of this camera?

Do you think it's necessary to use LensAlign and do the autofocus test when I take it out of the package?

I also read that you should shoot this camera with a higher shutter speed and ISO for better results.

I'd mess around with it a bit first, lenses may not need calibration.

I cannot comment on LensAlign as I have never used it, as for shutter speed I alternate from fast to slow, high ISO to low ISO depending on what I want.

This is something I found yesterday to fine tune your lenses with. Works just like the $65 LensAlign system but much cheaper.
I went to a craft store (Hobby Lobby) and bought a sheet of form core that has adhesive on one side already on it. that was the only thing I had to buy.

I use a one meter metal scale inclined at approximately 45 degrees. That serves the purpose.

I would not feel aligning a good Nikkor lens on a D800 should be necessary. In my film days I did nothing different with my Hasselblad, Leicaflex, or F4. I matched, film, shutter speed and F shop to what I was shooting. I also went from a D7100 to a D800. I slapped my 105MM Nikkor on my D800 and went to town. My D7100 shot great images and my D800 shoots better images. As mentioned above, practice. Photography is 10% theory and 90% practice. A bad photographer will shoot bad images with a great camera. A great photographer will shoot great images with a cheap camera. A great photographer will shoot outstanding images with a great camera with less effort. IMHO.Roger
