Multiple exposure with nikon mirrorless cameras

I have a Nikon z7II and a z5. I am taking ten multiple exposures of a moving object using the light setting.

With the z7ii the camera first takes a single photo, then if I click the shutter the second time it takes the 10 photos. BUT this gives me a fully exposed photo on top of the multiple exposure.

This does not happen with the z5

I am using the same settings for both.

Very confusing...why does the z7II do this.....I need this capability so I cannot now use my better z7II for my shoots.

Please help...thanks.

I don not have any Nikon Z cameras, but I am sure someone will be along soon to help you out!

Welcome to Nikonites!

Can you share some more info? I'm confused what you want your Z7ii to do. How are the multiple exposures treated in the z5 that's different than the z7? Can you share some example shots from both the 5 & 7 so we know what you mean? I'm intrigued with how you are using multiple exposure on a moving subject.

When I shoot multiple exposure on my z6, the first shot stays on the screen and the next shots get filled in as I shoot. Upon completion, I see the composite of the combined shots, not just a single exposure, but thats the way I have it set up in the Multiple Exposure Menu.

Do you have Keep all exposures checked? Are you seeing just the first exposure? Have you played around with the different overlay modes; light vs dark vs avg vs add? Mine is set to add. It could be that with 10 exposures, you are adding too much light to the composite and the final is all blown out highlights. Try dialing down the exposure to keep the light parts of each exposure to a minimum.

I can't explain why the 5 does it and the 7 doesnt unless there are more options available in the z7 that arent available in the z5 Double check the menus to be sure all settings (and available options) are the same.

Let us know how it goes. Good luck!

Are the settings you are using in Multiple Exposures the same for both the 5 and 7? I would bring up the Multiple Exposure menu in both and make sure they are identical.

The other thing I would check is that you have the latest firmware for both.

Here is the page for the online manual covering Multiple Exposure with the Z7ii. It gives a minimal explanation for all the different options in this mode. You may already have looked at this, but thought I would include it in case you find it useful.
